چکیده

O CONGENITAL ABSENCE of the pericardium is a well described but uncommon condition.'`9 In 1959, Ellis et al.2 noted that in the vast majority of cases partial or complete left-sided pericardial defects were present; right-sided or total pericardial absence is extremely rare. Although characteristic roentgenographic findings are usually present in congenital absence of the pericardium, clinically it may be mistaken for a variety of cardiac and noncardiac conditions. These include atrial septal defect, idiopathic dilatation of pulmonary artery, pulmonic stenosis, cardiac tumor, mitral valve disease, left ventricular aneurysm, corrected transposition of the great vessels, left hilar adenopathy, mediastinal tumor and bronchogenic carcinoma.7' I Associated abnormalities of the heart and lungs may also occur.2' I The diagnosis can be definitively established by inducing a left pneumothorax; air appears abnormally under the right pericardium when the patient is turned to the left lateral decubitus position.4 The purpose of this study was to evaluate the echocardiographic appearance of pericardial absence in order to determine whether the ultrasound technique could be used reliably to differentiate this condition from those which it clinically resembles, especially atrial septal defect. Two groups of patients were included: 1) patients with congenital absence of the pericardium and 2) patients with acquired absence of the pericardium.

Comparative study of pulse oximetry, physical examination and echocardiography results in the diagnosis of congenital heart defects in neonates in the first 24 hours of life

Introduction: Congenital heart disease is the most common congenital anomaly. About 50% of Neonates with congenital heart disease are asymptomatic in the first few days of life and are not diagnosed on initial examination. Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive method that can show the percentage of oxygen saturation in the blood and congenital heart disease. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-se...

Frequency of Congenital Heart Diseases in Prelingual Sensory-Neural Deaf Children

Introduction: Hearing impairment is the most frequent sensorial congenital defect in newborns and has increased to 2–4 cases per 1,000 live births. Sensory-neural hearing loss (SNHL) accounts for more than 90% of all hearing loss. This disorder is associated with other congenital disorders such as renal, skeletal, ocular, and cardiac disorders. Given that congenital heart diseases are life-thre...

Aneurysms of sinus of Valsalva are rare cardiac abnormalities. They are dilatations of the aortic sinuses and are classified as congenital or acquired. If located in the right coronary sinus they are usually ruptured into right heart chambers and frequently a ventricular septal defect coexists with this condition. This paper reports a 30-year-old woman with ruptured aneurysm of the right sinus ...
